My Top-Up to Afghanistan Didn’t Arrive: A Step-by-Step Troubleshooting Guide
If a top-up to Afghanistan hasn’t arrived, first check your email receipt and the number on it, then ask the recipient to check their balance and SMS, and if it still isn’t there, contact support with your order reference. Most top-ups are delivered within seconds, a few take a little longer, and a top-up that fails is refunded to your card.
The steps below are in the order that solves most cases fastest. Stop as soon as you find the answer.
Key takeaways
- No email receipt? The payment may not have completed. Check your spam folder and your bank.
- Check the number on the receipt digit by digit.
- Ask the recipient to check their balance and look for an SMS from their operator.
- Postpaid lines can’t receive top-up; the top-up fails and is refunded.
- A failed top-up is refunded to your card; a top-up delivered to a wrong but valid number can’t be reversed.
Step 1: Did the payment go through?
Every completed order gets an email receipt with an order reference and the phone number the credit was sent to. Look for it first.
- Check spam, junk and promotions folders. Receipts sometimes land there.
- Check the email address you typed at checkout. A typo means the receipt went elsewhere, but the order can still have been delivered.
- If you have a free account, open “My orders”. Your order history shows whether the order exists.
If there is no receipt and no order, the payment probably didn’t complete. That can happen if your bank declined it, the approval step in your banking app timed out, or the checkout was closed early. In that case nothing was sent.
What about a charge on my bank app? Banks sometimes show a payment that didn’t complete as “pending” for a while. That is usually a temporary hold that disappears on its own. If a completed charge stays on your statement but you have no receipt, contact support so we can check.
Step 2: Is the number on the receipt correct?
Open the receipt and compare the number with the one your relative uses, digit by digit:
- It should have 9 digits after +93 and start with 7.
- The network shown should match theirs. Roshan numbers start 079 or 072, AWCC 070 or 071, Etisalat 078 or 073, Atoma (formerly MTN) 077 or 076, and Salaam 074 or 075.
If one digit is different, the credit may have gone to someone else’s valid number, and a top-up delivered to a wrong but valid number can’t be reversed. Our guide to Afghan number prefixes helps you check the network.
Step 3: Has it simply not shown up yet?
Delivery is automatic and usually happens within seconds. Occasionally an operator is slow and it takes a little longer. Before doing anything else:
- Wait a few minutes and ask again.
- Remember the time difference. If it is night in Afghanistan, your relative may not have looked at their phone yet.
Step 4: Ask the recipient to check their phone
Ask your relative to:
- Look for an SMS from their operator. Operators normally send one when credit or a bundle is added.
- Check their balance in the way they usually do with their operator, for example through the operator’s app or the method they normally use.
- Restart the phone. This can help the balance or a new data bundle show up properly.
- For a data bundle, make sure mobile data is turned on and the phone isn’t in airplane mode.
If they find the SMS or the new balance, the top-up arrived and you are done.
Step 5: Is it a postpaid line?
Online top-up works only for prepaid numbers. If the number is a postpaid or contract line, for example a phone provided by an employer, the top-up can’t be delivered. When that happens, the top-up fails and the payment is refunded to your card.
If you aren’t sure, ask the person whether they get a monthly bill or buy credit. Our guide to prepaid vs postpaid in Afghanistan explains the difference.
Step 6: Contact support with your order reference
If you have checked the steps above and the credit still isn’t there, contact us. Support answers by email or contact form in English, Dari and Pashto. To get the quickest answer, include:
- your order reference from the receipt,
- the recipient’s number,
- the email address you used to pay,
- what the recipient sees: no SMS, no change in balance, or an error message.
Please send one message with all the details rather than placing the order again. A second order to the same number doesn’t fix the first and may simply deliver twice.
What happens if the top-up failed?
If an operator rejects a top-up, for example because the number isn’t an active prepaid line, the payment is refunded to your card. How long the refund takes to appear depends on your bank; card refunds can take a few business days to show on a statement. The details are in our refund policy.
If you were charged twice for one order, the duplicate is refunded.
How to avoid problems next time
- Copy the number from a recent WhatsApp chat or text instead of typing it from memory.
- Read the summary line with the number and network above the Pay button before you pay.
- Use an email address you check, so the receipt reaches you.
- Create a free account so “My orders” keeps a record of every top-up.
- Tell the recipient to expect an SMS, so they can confirm quickly.
- Use only the official site. Our guide to sending top-up safely explains the warning signs of fake sellers.
In short
When a top-up doesn’t seem to arrive, work through it in order: confirm the payment and receipt, check the number, wait a few minutes, ask the recipient to check their SMS and balance, and rule out a postpaid line. If it still isn’t there, contact support with your order reference rather than sending again. A failed top-up is refunded to your card. A top-up to a wrong but valid number can’t be reversed, which is why checking the number before paying matters most.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a top-up take?
Usually seconds. Occasionally an operator is slower and it takes a little longer.
I didn’t get a receipt. Was I charged?
Check your spam folder and your bank. If there is no order and no completed charge, the payment didn’t go through and nothing was sent.
Can you cancel a top-up sent to the wrong number?
If the wrong number is valid and the credit was delivered, it can’t be reversed by the operator.
Will I get my money back if the top-up fails?
Yes. A failed top-up is refunded to your card.
Should I just send the top-up again?
Not before checking. Contact support with your order reference first, so you don’t pay twice.
